Selena Quintanilla Perez (Spanish pronunciation"se'lena kinta'nija 'pere April 16, 1971 - March 31 1995), was an American Tejano singer. Her contributions to music and fashion made Selena the "Queen" of Tejano music. She was among the most popular performers from the Mexican-American genre of the late 20th century. In the year 2020, Billboard magazine put her in third position in their ranking of "Greatest Latino artists of All Time", based on both Latin albums and the Latin charts of songs. Some media outlets described her as the "Tejano Madonna" due to her attire choices. She is also regarded as one of the most influential Latin artists of all time . She is widely credited with propelling the Tejano genre into the mainstream market.The youngest of the Quintanilla family, she debuted on the music scene as one of the members of the band Selena y Los Dinos, which also included her elder siblings A.B. Quintanilla Quintanilla. They were frequently criticised in the 1980s and refused performances at Texas venues due to her performances of Tejano music, which is a largely male-dominated genre. However, her popularity grew after she won the Tejano Music Award for Female Vocalist of the Year in 1987. She was awarded the award nine consecutive times. She signed with EMI Latin in 1989 and released her debut album self-titled in the same year. During that time, her brother was her primary music producer and songwriter.Selena released Entre a Mi Mundo (1992), which peaked at top of the US Billboard Regional Mexican Albums chart for eight months in a row. It was hailed by music critics as the "breakthrough" album of her career. One of the singles, "Como la Flor" was one of her most listened-to tracks. Live! Live! Amor Prohibido was her 1994 album. It was one of America's top Latin albums. It was widely praised as being the catalyst for Tejano music's debut as a marketable genre because it became one the most loved Latin music subgenres of the time.
